Dallas Mapping Project
1. Were you born here, if not where are you originally from?
CM: I am actually from the East Coast. I was born in Charlotte, North Carolina. The majority of my family lived in Dallas, so that is one of the main reasons why I moved here.
2. What do you enjoy most about your job?
CM: For one, I enjoy my job because I’m surrounded with what I love to do and have the opportunity to greet and get to know new people who come to my store each day.
3. What are some of your interest or hobbies?
CM: I am a very outgoing person. I usually go out to the lake to do a bit of fishing. That helps me relax and get away from the city and work life. Plus, I get to spend time with my family.
4. Was becoming a store owner something you imagined yourself doing?
CM: Well, just like any other young person I wanted to be something big like an astronaut, or a famous athlete.
5. What were some challenges that you had when you first started, did you accomplishthem?
CM: I knew that I had a passion for technology and how computers work brought many advances in the real world, but I had a difficulty starting because I did not have the money to start the business. I knew I could ask family members for the money, but another question that bothered me was how I was going to pay them back if the business did not succeed. After talking to my family they knew that I had to take risks and they were behind me 100 percent. That is what made me have confidence to ask for the money and begin my computer store business.
6. What type of skills did you need to open your business?
CM: I needed to know how a computer functioned from the inside and out. It is like a mechanic fixing a car and is the same concept with a computer. Another thing that I needed is communication skills with customers, and making sure I knew how to run a successful business day in and day out.
7. What school or schools did you attend as a child?
CM: I attended Allenbrook Elementary School which was just a few blocks away from my house, so it was an easy walk. My middle school was Coulwood Middle School. It was a little further from my house, and there were plenty of times when I would come late to school. The high school that I graduated from was Thomasboro Highschool School and I had a computer teacher named Ms. Stein. She was the one that inspired my passion for computers, which ultimately lead me to the career that I have today.
8. Do you have any advice that you would give to anybody trying to run a business?
CM: Yes, I actually do. One of the things that I would say to anybody trying to run a business would be to always keep the customer in mind before all else. They are the ones that keep your business going so it`s important to have them as your top priority. One more piece of advice that I would offer would be to make sure that you stay organized, be honest, and be helpful no matter what service you try to sell, it will make your business grow.
9. Who were some of the idols you looked to as a child, or still do?
CM: I know that this is crazy but the person that really inspired me was my teacher Ms. Stein, as well as Steve Jobs, and Bill Gates. They really opened my eyes and showed me what technology is capable of doing.
10. How long do you plan on managing your business?
CM: Honestly, I really don’t know because for once, my business is doing great. I love working here; meeting and helping people, pretty much the whole experience.
