Dallas Mapping Project
B.H. Macon Peoples Garden
Dallas, TX
Launched Friday September 18, 2010
The people’s garden at B.H. Macon Elementary School was funded by the USDA food and nutrition services. The USDA paid for this garden and many others around the country to teach students about the importance of fresh fruits and vegetables. These gardens are expected to help with community beautification, and promote volunteerism around the community. This garden is part of First Lady Michelle Obama’s “Let’s move” initiative.
The Friday that this garden started a lot of students and parents went to the school to help clean up and set up plots for the vegetables. Other helpers included school staff and USDA representatives, who flew to Dallas just to attend the event. B.H. Macon’s Principal Kathy Snyder said “it is going to be an even more wonderful experience here at B.H Macon now that we have this outdoor classroom.” In the garden, the students plant zucchini, green beans, chili peppers, squash, cabbage, tomatoes and other vegetables. And every now and then they have a small farmers market in the parking lot and sell what they have grown.
Artifact:
The Gloria Harwood Performance Hall, 2010
In 2010 Mrs. Harwood passed away. She was a TAG teacher and a well respected member of the Macon team. When she passed away, they named the auditorium in her honor, and created a memorial at the entry so she will never be forgotten by the hundreds of students who she inspired as a teacher.
