Highland Park Village Shopping Center
Opened 1931
Highland Park Village was one of the first shopping centers in the United States, and the first one in Texas. It is located in the Park Cities one of the wealthiest neighborhoods in Dallas. With more than 100 stores, a movie theatre, and a grocery store you are sure to find what you’re looking for. Filled with luxurious stores and places to eat, the Village offers a wide variety of shopping options in one place, which is good, because Dallas is a big city and everything is spread out.
The center was designed by Marion Fooshee and James B. Cheek, in the Spanish mission style. It had the first Chanel store in Texas, and a classic movie theatre in the center of the complex. Owning a store here is very expensive and prices range from $1000-$1500 a (square foot) annually. The last owner of the shopping center paid $170 million dollars when it was purchased in 2009. This is a very prestigious place to shop and socialize, and shopping is a big part of our culture in Dallas. With 10 acres of stores and everything so close there is no need to go anywhere else. The Village became a National Historic Landmark in 2000, and is well worth the visit particulary during the Christmas season when the Village is lit up with thousands of white lights, and is the starting point for holiday carriage rides in a horse-drawn carriage.
Village Theatre
The neighborhood movie theatre at the Highland Park Village is an icon in the Park Cities. The Park Cities consist of two separate “island cities”, Highland Park and University Park, located within the City of Dallas. The Village Theatre has 4 small auditoriums and a larger auditorium that seats 96 people. The Theatre is known for its beautiful architecture and for the luxurious movie seats inside the theatre. Some local residents have been coming here since they were children for the past 70-80 years, and the Village Theatre is truly a part of Dallas history.
