The Rachofsky House
Completed 1996
The Rachofsky House in Dallas, Texas is a world renowned AIA National Honor Award winning building. The house sits on a beautiful piece of land, in the heart of the city, next to a small pond. Art installations surround the house, and the house itself is a work of art, both inside and out. The house is an art gallery where the owner, Howard Rachofsky, can show his collection of over 700 pieces of modern and contemporary art. Something that makes the house so unusual is that it is a one bedroom house designed for a bachelor; this gave the architect Richard Meier the freedom to create an architectural masterpiece without having to accommodate the needs of a large family.
When one approaches the house, you arrive at a white “wall” that is majestic and quite striking. The front façade is reserved and very different than the back of the house which consists of double-height windows that allow natural light to permeate the entire building. This façade is definitely welcoming and inspiring. The Rachosky House is one of the most prestigious houses in Dallas, with its amazing art collection and philanthropic events, a real jewel in our city.
High Museum, Atlanta GA
Opened 1983
The High Museum in Atlanta has a collection of over 11,000 pieces of art. The museum has all of Richard Meier’s signature features: the white façade, the grid, lots of glass and a smooth flow of spaces. This Museum inspired Howard Rachofsky to hire Meier to design his own house- seems like he wanted an art gallery of his own.
