Southern Methodist University (SMU)
1915
SMU is the largest private college in Dallas. In 2013, U.S. News & World Report ranked SMU 58th among National Universities. SMU was established during the unsuccessful attempt to relocate Southern University from Georgetown, Texas to Fort Worth or Dallas. Inspired by the Roman Pantheon, and the library Thomas Jefferson designed for the University of Virginia, architect Shepley Rutan, made SMU an integral part of the Dallas community.
SMU opened classes for students in 1915. It is located in the Park Cities which is known for its excellent schools and beautiful homes. SMU is well known in Dallas for its sophistication, and prestigious educational programs. It is a beautiful campus featuring hundreds of Live Oak trees that makes Dallas proud to claim SMU as its own.
Designed by Santiago Calatrava, “The Wave” has become one of the most recognizable symbols of Southern Methodist University. Completing the duo with Calatrava’s new Margaret Hunt Hill Bridge over the Trinity River, “The Wave” takes art at SMU, and in the DFW Metroplex, to a new level.
