Pleasant Grove

Founded in the 1840’s
Pleasant Grove is one of the 100 neighborhoods located in the southeast part of Dallas. It is one of the most diverse ethnic neighborhoods. It may be one of the toughest areas for police to patrol, but Pleasant Grove is slowly improving. They’ve built new schools, libraries and fast food restaurants to help the neighborhood evolve into a more desirable place. And, as Pleasant Grove improves, it is becoming a more desirable place to live.
Some of the first settlers in Pleasant Grove were W.B. Elam, Richard Bruton, and Cornelius Cox. In 1916, the first brick house was built, and Don Lebow decided to name one of the schools after the location. Pleasant Grove was a separate community that had its own school district formed in 1937. Eventually, Pleasant Grove merged with the Dallas Independent School District. In the past, Lake June Road and Buckner Boulevard were considered the center of Pleasant Grove. Today, as in its beginning, Pleasant Grove is a good place to call home.

St. Augustine Catholic Church, 1937.
St. Augustine was the first Catholic Church in the Pleasant Grove area. Initially, local meetings were held in an old shed on Mr. and Mrs. Thomas’ farm until Mabel Fite offered three acres of land on his property to build a new church. When the church was completed, they changed the name of the street in which it was located from “Hazelnut Road” to “St. Augustine”. St. Augustine Church is not just a place for prayer, it is also a private school.
