Dallas Zoo

Opened 1888
The Dallas Zoo is one of Dallas’ most enjoyable attractions. With more than 2,000 animals and more than 100 acres of land, there is plenty to see and plenty to explore. It’s a great place for families to spend the day together and learn about extraordinary animals. The Dallas Zoo happens to be one of only 10 zoos in the entire nation to have koalas. The zoos most popular exhibit however, would definitely be Giants of Savannah. The Giants of Savannah exhibit is a must-see to anyone visiting the zoo. It’s a really special part of this site and it is also the only multi-species zoo exhibit in the United States to mix elephants and other species in the same habitat.
The Dallas Zoo started with only two deer and two mountain lions back in the spring of 1888. Originally the animals were kept in City Park but later relocated to Fair Park in 1909. However, the Dallas Zoo quickly outgrew its home and had to be relocated once again to Marsalis Park where it stills stands to this day.

Jabari

In 2004, Jabari, an adult Western Lowland gorilla escaped from his habitat and attacked several guests. He managed to injure 4 people before he was put down by Dallas police after attempting to charge at them. The Gorilla Conservation Research Center later closed the Gorilla exhibit for renovations to prevent another incident like this from happening. The image of the zoo however took a big hit after this event and it proved to be the start of a rough period for the zoo.
