The Texas Star at State Fair of Texas

Fair Park
Debut 1985
The Texas Star is the most popular ride in Dallas for three weeks each year during the State Fair of Texas.  And, at 212 feet tall, the Texas Star is the largest Ferris wheel in North America.  It was built in Italy, and carries up to 264 passengers at a time in its 45 gondolas.  On a clear day, passengers can see the skyline of Ft. Worth which is 40 miles away.  The three week long State Fair begins in September, and the Ferris wheel is illuminated each night, serving as a reminder that fall has arrived in Big D.
The State Fair of Texas began in 1886.  It is held at Fair Park, which is home to a wide array of attractions including one of the largest collections of Art Deco buildings in the country, the Cotton Bowl football stadium, livestock shows including the prize winning cattle, pig, and chicken shows, and Big Tex, the iconic larger-than-life cowboy who each year welcomes visitors to the Fair with his famous greeting “Howdy, Folks!”

Chicago Ferris wheel, 1893.
The world’s first Ferris Wheel was invented by George Washington Gale Ferris for the World Columbian Exposition held in Chicago in 1893.  The engineering marvel was intended to rival the iconic Eiffel Tower  that was built in Paris for the 1889 World’s Fair.
